Partch Family Tree
The family tree includes 12 generations of Partch/Patch families
(dates and places of
births, marriages, deaths, and burials) starting with the unnamed parents of twins Quinton
Patch and Mary Patch who were born
in the village of Tiverton, in the County of Devon, England in the year
1727. Information prior to this date is hazy and needs further study
before a firm direction can be taken concerning Quinton's and Mary's ancestry. We do know however, that the parents of Mary and Quinton
passed away sometime before 1740 and that, at an early age, the twins were brought to
America, the Colonies, by their foster parents who settled in Stamford,
Connecticut.
Quinton Patch died on February 09, 1818 in Danbury, Connecticut. He married Mercy Ambler on April 08, 1746. She was born on November 30, 1724 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut and died in 1780 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Sometime between 1810 and 1820, one of Quinton Patch's sons Thompson Patch Sr. and his seven sons changed the family name from Patch to Partch. The first change in the family name appears on the census for 1820 when it was recorded Parch. On the census for 1830 it is recorded as Partch. The reason for changing the name is not definitely known. One story is that the four brothers quarreled and two of them had their name changed by act of the legislature. There is no record to be found in the files of the Vermont State Legislature to corroborate this story, and there seems to be only the one brother who changed his name. Another story is that a will which was sent over from England, in which the name was spelled differently, influenced them to make the change. Another story is that when Quinton Patch was making out his will, there was a lot of infighting between Quinton and his wife, Mercy, and his 11 children (especially Quinton's first child, Thompson) as to who would inherit. In the process, Thompson got mad and told his father he was going to change the names of all his children from Patch to Partch. At any rate the change seems to have been made consistently by Thompson Sr. and his seven sons. And as the name Partch does not seem to have been used by others, those bearing it (and they are now scattered over nearly all the states of the union) are quite definitely related.
Mary Patch married Nathaniel Lockwood on January 02, 1742/43 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He was born on May 30, 1717 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Mary Patch's daughter, Mary (Polly) Lockwood, married her first cousin Thompson Patch (Partch), Sr. on April 24, 1776 in The Congregational Church, Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Thompson Patch (Partch), Sr. was a descendant of Quinton Patch. Updated 08/30/2001
